About
Azfar Jafri: Narrative Film Specialist
Self-taught Animator to Film Director
My journey into filmmaking didn’t begin with a camera or a film school acceptance letter. It began with an obsession—one that was ignited by the boundless possibilities of open-world computer games. While others saw entertainment, I saw a blueprint for storytelling without limits.
I am a self-taught filmmaker who traded a career in Telecom Engineering for the unpredictable magic of the director’s chair. Because I skipped the traditional film school route, I spent years in the “wilderness” of self-discovery, teaching myself the technical languages of the future: 3D animation, visual effects, music production, and programming logic. These were the tools I needed to build worlds that hadn’t yet been seen in Pakistani cinema.
From Indie Roots to Blockbuster Epics
I have spent over a decade pushing the envelope of what is possible on screen. My career has been a journey of extremes—from the gritty, indie suspense of Siyaah to the high-octane comedy of Janaan and Parchi, and finally, to the massive scale of Pakistan’s sci-fi epic, Umro Ayyar – A New Beginning.
With 6 live-action feature films directed and 2 animated features led as Head of Animation, my work is defined by a constant desire to bridge the gap between technical innovation and raw human emotion.
Deconstructing the Craft
I believe that the future of Pakistani cinema depends on bridging the gap between theory and the “real world.” I don’t just teach filmmaking; I deconstruct it. By sharing the unfiltered production diaries, the creative pivots, and the high-stakes challenges of my own sets, I aim to equip the next generation of creators with the practical truth of the craft.
I am also not just making movies; I am building an industry. Whether it’s navigating complex VFX or mastering comedic timing, my goal remains the same: to redefine the boundaries of South Asian storytelling.
from the journal
Every director has a beginning. Mine was a decade of experimentation, technical obsession, and finding my voice in the unknown. Read Chapter One: Lost in Wilderness for the full story of how it all began.
