Feedback, Friction, and Finding the Emotional Center
Creative projects rarely emerge fully formed. Whether you’re making a film, building a game, or designing an experience, the process is often a cycle of building, breaking, and rebuilding. Iteration is the lifeblood of creative direction.
There were countless moments during my films where friction came from every corner… actors, producers, assistant directors, production designers, art directors… you name it. The intent was always noble: everyone wanted the best for the film. The funny part? They rarely agreed with one another either.
As captain of the ship, you make a call, knowing some will be disappointed. You stand by it, hoping it steers the project away from icebergs. And yet, disasters still happen, and suddenly you’re surrounded by a thousand fingers pointing at you (yes, borrowed straight from Hazard, and it fits perfectly).
Then comes the reset. Solve one problem, only for another to arise. Repeat, repeat, repeat… until finally, the film is complete. That’s the beauty of iterative creative direction. It’s messy. It’s relentless. But it’s also what makes the end result worth it.
Here are some suggestions for anyone interested in directing a feature film, series, or even a game. The rules are largely the same.
Feedback as Fuel
Feedback is rarely easy to hear, but it’s always necessary. The best directors and creative leads know how to filter it: separating subjective taste from genuine insight. Good feedback doesn’t kill your vision, it sharpens it. Each note, even the ones you initially resist, is an opportunity to refine the emotional core of your work.
Friction as Progress
Friction within a creative team can feel like conflict, but often it’s the sign of something working. A writer pushing back against a design choice, or an artist questioning a mechanic, is a sign that people care deeply about the outcome. The challenge is not to erase friction but to guide it, turning passionate disagreements into alignment around a stronger, shared vision.
Finding the Emotional Center
Iteration isn’t just about polishing visuals or tweaking mechanics. It’s about repeatedly asking: what should this make the audience feel? The emotional center is the compass. Without it, you risk endless revisions that never move the piece closer to its purpose. With it, every round of iteration becomes a step toward resonance.
The Director’s Role in the Cycle
The director’s job isn’t to have all the answers, but to keep the team focused on the “why.” It’s about balancing openness to change with clarity of vision. By framing feedback around the emotional core, you prevent the process from becoming chaos. Iteration becomes less about pleasing everyone and more about discovering the truth that was hidden in the work all along.
In the end, creative direction is not about chasing perfection, it’s about patiently carving away until what remains is the story, the moment, the experience that moves people.
